Hermits a slight intro sort of

One of my visions for eathstar village is a community of hermits. Some have to have it explained, obviously they're not going to fit in with this segment of outcasts. Even loners and hermits are not islands.
Back when Myspace was the ruling social media I had a page for earthstar village.  I liked the format of the old Myspace, alas fb took over.
 I went on a roll about hermits.  Was it a blog or a page, I don't remember and whoa this new technology talking about it as back in the day.....
Any way, I guess that's just a lead in to my fascination with hermits, loners, outcasts that cast themselves.
But what is it about people that choose to live that way, a mystique? Pity, morbid fascination?
What's the psychology of this tendency any way.
And obviously this is a precursor to more on hermits and community concepts.
